A little England in the middle of Sri Lanka – Nuwara Eliya
Nuwara Eliya is one of the most popular places for those who are fond of cool weather since it has the coldest temperature on any given day right throughout the year. In fact, the British rulers who ruled the country in the 19th century took a great liking to this city for its cold climate and its suitability for the growth of coffee and tea which were their main crops of export then.
Nuwara Eliya city resembles the Darjeeling city of India. It is about 156 Km away from Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka. Nuwara Eliya is also reachable on Avissawella-Hatton road from Colombo. It is just 56 Km away from the city of Kandy. The trip offers a breathtaking scenery along the way which runs through the Ramboda Pass.
Nuwara Eliya city offers a great variety in accommodation where it differs from 5 star hotels to cottages, all of which offers cosy environment. The buildings in Nuwara Eliya is a mixture of colonial and modern buildings.
It is also full of gardens with a wide range of beautiful flowers. The cynosure of eyes is the Hakgala Botanical Gardens, about 16 Km away from the town.
The best period to visit Nuwara Eliya is from March to May.It is when the flowers bloom giving the visitors an eyeful of nature’s beauty. If you like to experience ice, then pay a visit in December.
Once you are in Nuwara Eliya, there are many more places of attraction that is worth visiting. They are Victoria Park, Gregory Lake and Gardens, Moon plains, Lovers Leap falls and the Seetha Eliya Temple. If you are fond of hiking, then Piduruthalagala the highest peak of the country, is an ideal place. You can also visit the village of Shanthipura, which is the village located at the highest altitude in Sri Lanka.
