The Shanthipura Village is situated in the Nuwara Eliya District and is 1,692 meters above sea level. This settlement was the brainwave of T. William Fernando who was a member of parliament and represented Nuwara Eliya in 1960. Thereafter the settlement was upgraded with better facilities, by R. Premadasa, President of Sri Lanka at the time and was renamed Mudungala. However, this settlement is best known as Shanthipura to this date.
The settlement is a short drive out of Nuwara Eliya, Kandy Road and its route takes places at the turn off at Bambarakala Temple which is on the Oliphant Estate Road. This road leads up to the Shanthipura Settlement, which is a village in the Kikiliyamana range of mountains and is no doubt a village that is proud of it being on the highest elevation in Sri Lanka.
Once the top is reached the climes get cooler and one could indulge in the beauty of Nuwara Eliya which lies beyond. The mountain normally is covered with mist, but on a bright sunny day one could be rewarded with a bird’s eye view of the entire surrounding.
The top of the mountain has a small building which could be used to look at the beautiful view around. One could see Lake Gregory in the background, its shimmering and glistening waters giving a beautiful picture of the entire area.
The beautiful lush tea plantations which adorn the sides of the mountains casting a green carpet of lush vegetation, is something you will not miss. Nuwara Eliya is a mass of tea cultivation and provides employment to several people in the District. The village also boasts of a beautiful dagoba which extends to great heights, with lush vegetable plantations around.
Sri Lanka has a lot of offer its visitors and this is one place that you should visit and not miss out.
