Gregory Lake

Lake Gregory (or Gregory lake of Gregory Reservoir) is located in the hill country of Nuwara Eliya and was a lake that was constructed during the time of Governor Sir William Gregory. Hence the name Lake Gregory. Originally, the region was a swamp at the foot of the little mountains bordering the city. In 1873 in order to make more land accessible for the development of the town, Sir William Gregory authorized the damming of the Thalagala stream originating from Mount Pidurutalagala. Mr C. J. R. Le Mesurier (Assistant Government Agent for Nuwara Eliya) stored the lake with trout in 1881.

In 1913, the lake’s waters were directed into a tunnel that flows between the town and Nanu Oya to a hydropower station at’ Blackpool.’ To this day, the power station continues to supply the city with electricity. Lake Gregory was used in British times for water sports and recreational operations.

The jet-ski rides and boat rides are available with all safety measures in place and it is indeed a place to enjoy your holiday. The serenity of the lake gives tourists a different atmosphere. Gregory’s lake can be reached by a sea plane from Colombo that takes just 30 minutes. Gregory Lake is located at the southern end of the city where holiday makers can enjoy a leisurely stroll along the paved walkways, with swan-shaped paddle ships for the more adventurous. For children and even adults, there are pony rides around the lake, with plenty of fast food stalls in a distinct region where you can enjoy a meal.

The happenings at the lake are active during the April Season when water sports take place for visitors. Other sites of interest are the Lovers Leap Falls, Single Tree Hill, Victoria Park and Pedro Mountain.
