Rumassala

“Rumassala’’ –  Being kissed by the sea waves……

According to the historical legends,Rumassala is a very important place to Sri Lanka. As mentioned in the world renowned old Indian book, ‘Ramayanaya’ written by Vaalmikee , Rama and Lakshmanfought a war against Rawana to rescue Seetha from Rawana. In this battle, Lakshman was injured and Hanumantha was sent to Himalaya in India to bring a kind of herbs to treat Lakshman. Unfortunately, Hanumantha could not find that kind of herbs so he brought a broken part of Himalaya to Sri Lanka. After getting the required kind of herbs, Hanumantha left that part in the sea near Galle and it is believed that that part of land should be the area that we call as Rumassala today.

When you travel about 5 kilometers from Galle towards Matara, you will find the Rumassala Junction beside the Cement Factory. When turning to right from there, the beautiful mountainous area of Rumassala will be exposed before your very own eyes. While you can see the high mountain range and the community of flora on one side, you will be able to watch the long beaches on the other side. Because of this, Rumassala can be regarded as an area of land which is very high in natural beauty

On the other hand, the most amazing fact is that we have to believe that the historical legend about Rumassalashould be true because the community of flora which we can see in Rumassala is very different from that found in other forests of Sri Lanka and it is very similar to the community of flora found in Himalaya in India. It is also believed that because of the different nature of the sea near Rumassala it has a high gravitational force too.

You who go on a trip to Rumassala have to buy foodstuffs and other necessities from Galle or on your way to Rumassala as there are very few shops or kiosks near it except the Tourist Hotels. There, you have the chance to have a bath as agroup in the evening or to have a small party while singing a song on the beach as well as to have a walk on the jungle beach or to visit the Japanese Peace Temple and the Observatory Point.
