Mirissa and dolphins
Mirissa is a town situated in Southern Province of Sri Lanka, with cities Matara only 14 KM away and Galle city being 36 Km away.
Mirissa traditionally is famous for its fishing industry, having a fishing harbor which caters to the numerous fishermen in the vicinity.
Of late, it has become a popular location for both local and foreign tourists as one of the best places to see dolphins and whales. This is made possible by the use of hired boats which are readily available for a reasonable price. In addition, one can enjoy the lovely beaches in Mirissa. Mirissa is also famous for certain indigenous cultural activities such as Pora Pol Pitiya (a sport event), Daha Ata Sanniya (dancing event) at nights
Mirissa is 149 Km away from Colombo, and is reachable by bus, or car driving on the Southern Expressway and exiting at Kokmaduwa and by train too.
Mirissa is located very close to the historical city of Galle which has lots of historical, cultural, and entertaining places to see. Matara is another city close to Mirissa where one can visit the Pigeon Island, take a dip at the Polhena beach. For surf lovers, Mirissa is just 4 Km away from the city of Weligama which offers a fantastic bay for surfing.
