Six decades ago, Sri Lanka's tourism industry was not so advanced.
And when the air traffic was not there, tourists from other countries
came to Sri Lanka only by Passenger ships. Many of those who had come
had only been touring in limited locations in Sri Lanka. When
considering that, Unawatuna Beach was the heart of Sri Lanka's tourist
arrivals and the oldest tourist attraction.
Unawatuna Beach is also the oldest tourist beach in the South. But
today, it is a well-developed beach front that provides all the
facilities for tourists. But there are not so many hotels, tourist
information centers, outdoor clubs there.
Due to the cleanliness of Unawatuna beach, it is possible for the
foreign tourists to get a fascinating experience in the sea, without any
fear. Also, tourists coming to this area can see the 'Ritipanna'
(Fishing by sitting on wooden stand) a traditional fishery system
passing down from the ancestors. The historic Wellle Devalaya is near
the bay of the sea, where the waves roll on Devalaya ground and return
to the sea. Tourists adore watching this scene.
There is a abundance of sea food such as crabs, prawns, lobsters,
and oysters flavored with many herbal products around Unawatuna beach.
Koggala Beach near Koggala, Koggala Martin Wickramasinghe folk Museum
are not far away from Unawatuna beach. You can get a fascinating boat
ride in the lake around Madoldoowa , a small island close to the
Museum.
