The Dutch Fort is in Batticaloa Town of the Munmunai North Divisional Secretariat in Batticaloa District. This fort was built during the time of the Dutch occupation and had been expanded and maintained by the British. The fort precinct near the lagoon of the Batticaloa Town can be identified as a Buddhist monastery, which had been in existence in the early centuries of the Christian era, long before the fort was built, from the discovery of a stone chatra and an asanagala belonging to that period.
